The Safe House - Shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence.

If you are victim of domestic violence, the shelter offers you:

  • You can be accommodated within 24 hours.

The Safe House – Shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence.

Since October 2000, Foundation of Local Democracy has been running the Safe House - Shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence in Sarajevo Canton.

The Shelter has a capacity of 25 beneficiaries, 10 women and 15 children.

The main goal of the Shelter is to provide physical protection and security for the victims, as well as psychosocial treatment to overcome the traumatic experiences and reintegrate into the community.

For victims of violence, accommodation at the Shelter is possible at all times. It is carried out on the recommendation of the Center for Social Work and the Police departments, according to Protocol on the Treatment of Victims of Domestic Violence, signed between the Foundation of Local Democracy, the Cantonal Center for Social Work and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton.

All services offered by the Shelter for victims of violence are free of charge.

The types of services provided to victims of domestic violence at the Shelter are:

  • Physical protection and security
  • Psychotherapy treatment (individual and group)
  • Occupational therapy
  • Social counseling and support (individual, group, contacts with other institutions)
  • Legal assistance - through the Center for Free Legal Aid - FLD Sarajevo (providing legal advice to beneficiaries, making submissions and representing them in court)
  • Medical assistance and rehabilitation in cooperation with health care institutions (emergency medical interventions, check-ups, medication)
  • Therapeutic work with the partner / perpetrator of violence, together with the Social welfare services of Sarajevo Canton on the premises of the Service, in the family - through mobile visits or through organizing self-help groups
  • Economic independence for beneficiaries through economic empowerment (inclusion of beneficiaries in the Women's Advice Center FLD Sarajevo, cooperation with the Employment Services and NGOs implementing programs of economic support for victims of domestic violence)
  • Psychotherapy treatment of children victims of violence (psychological support, assistance in mastering the school curriculum, recreational and entertainment program implemented by volunteers)
  • Contact and cooperation with governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations in order to implement individual plans of protection and reintegration of beneficiaries of the Shelter into the community.

Between October 2000 and July 2019, there were 1592 beneficiaries (675 women and 917 children) in the Shelter. 

SHELTER FOR GIRLS VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

A shelter for girls victims of sexual violence, incest, rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence has operated within the Women’s shelter since 2002. The shelter has capacity for 10 girls above 12 years of age, BIH nationals.

The primary goal of the Shelter is to provide direct protection for girls, psychotherapy treatment for the purpose of rehabilitation and re-socialization (continuation of education, de-traumatization and overcoming traumatic experiences, reintegration into social life).

Between 2002 and July 2019, 322 girls stayed in the Shelter.
