From Cooperation to Action: Improving the System of Care for Victims of Gender-Based Violence in Sarajevo – Phase 1

Gender-based violence remains a major social challenge, often still perceived as a private issue rather than a collective responsibility. The project “From Cooperation to Action: Improving the System of Care for Victims of Gender-Based Violence in Sarajevo – Phase 1” is focused on strengthening the systemic response to gender-based violence in Sarajevo.

By connecting institutions, the academic community, and the wider public, the project contributes to building a safer and more just society in which the rights and dignity of women are fully protected. In this context, strengthening coordination and improving professional responses is essential to ensure effective and accessible support for victims.

Implementation period: January 1, 2026 - December 31, 2027

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the protection of women’s fundamental right to live free from violence, through the development of a more efficient, coordinated, and sustainable support system for victims of gender-based violence in Sarajevo. This objective is achieved through three interrelated strategic areas: strengthening institutional capacities, enhancing academic cooperation, and raising public awareness.

Improving the capacities and support for professionals working with victims of gender-based violence is essential for a more effective response. This will be achieved through the development and implementation of specialized tools and training programs, which will have a long-term impact on the quality of support and protection provided to victims. This contributes to more consistent, sensitive, and effective support for women navigating complex situations of violence. At the same time, the project establishes cooperation between relevant stakeholders from Sarajevo and Barcelona, with the aim of exchanging knowledge, experience, and good practices.

Special attention is also given to raising public awareness, as the fight against gender-based violence requires a shift in societal attitudes. Addressing gender-based violence as a public and collective issue is key to breaking silence and fostering long-term social change. Through communication campaigns and artistic initiatives, the project will create space for dialogue, break taboos, and encourage victims to speak out.

Ultimately, the project aims to move beyond isolated actions and contribute to a more coordinated, inclusive, and sustainable system of care.

The project is implemented by the Foundation of Local Democracy and the Solidaritat Foundation of the University of Barcelona, in cooperation with the University of Sarajevo, the University of Barcelona, the Ministry of Labour, Social Policy, Displaced Persons and Refugees of Canton Sarajevo, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Canton Sarajevo, with financial support from the City of Barcelona.
