The Foundation of Local Democracy has produced an animated video highlighting the importance of supporting women who have witnessed war crimes, with a special focus on the consequences of retraumatization
Although more than 30 years have passed since the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina, women who have survived wartime (sexual) violence still experience severe consequences, especially when called to testify in court. Re-examining the trauma, but also the perpetrators of the crime, often leads to retraumatization, stress and additional impairment of mental health.
In order to point out this issue, but also the possibility of free psychological support, the Local Democracy Foundation realized a short animated video in which it is clearly stated: witnesses of war crimes have the right to free psychological and legal help.
- Unfortunately, women victims of war are still one of the most sensitive, but also the most neglected population of our society. For many years, the Foundation of Local Democracy has been providing free legal, psychological and socio-economic support to women who have survived war traumas, both in the Sarajevo Canton and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. We hope that this video will encourage the women who testified before the court, to seek professional support after their testimony and find their way to recovery - emphasizes Jasmina Mujezinović, executive director of the Foundation.
As a reminder, at the end of last year, the Foundation of Local Democracy signed an Agreement on Cooperation with the Court of BiH, namely with the Registry Office and the Witness Support Department, which created the foundations for long-term and institutionalized support for women victims of war, especially after the end of court proceedings.
The animated video about free psychological support for women victims of war and witnesses in court was realized within the project "Let's Embrace Opportunities Together", which is implemented by the Local Democracy Foundation with the financial support of AMICA e.V. Freiburg, the Baden-Württemberg Foundation and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany (BMZ).
